Indonesian Hand-carved & Painted Wooden Rod Puppet (Wayang Golek) Lady..
This beautiful wooden rod puppet (Wayang Golek) was made in the early 1980’s in Indonesia. In Indonesia, especially the Sundanese culture of West Java, puppeteers use this style of puppet for celebrations and special occasions.
This one has a beautifully painted hand-carved face. The head, neck, upper body and arms are carved out of wood, then put on a carved wooden dowel. The head can swivel on the dowel and wooden sticks move her arms to replicate dances. Her body, arms and the hands holding the puppet sticks are painted gold. The joints are attached with string. A beautifully sequined and beaded black velvet top adorns her upper body and she wears a cotton batik skirt featuring a traditional Indonesian batik print. She is 26 “ long from tip of her dress to top of her headdress. The skirt shows slight wear at its seam & ribbons are frayed. There’s a slight chip on the tip of the nose that was retouched with paint.
This is a delightful decorative folk art piece. It can be posed using a prop (such as an empty thin necked vase or bottle).
