ITEM DESCRIPTION

This vintage Hummel Ars Sacra Herbert Dubler Madonna & Child Chalkware Figurine is in Very Good Vintage Condition. NOTE: There are paint flakes here and there that you can notice. Produced in the United States by Ars Sacra / Herbert Dubler, Inc., this unusual Hummel collectible dates from approximately 1942–1949 and measures approximately 7\" tall.

The figurine depicts the Madonna seated while gently holding the Christ Child at her side. Mary is modeled with her head bowed toward the Child and wears a flowing cream and ivory robe accented by a soft teal-green mantle.

The Christ Child is dressed in pale green with delicate hand-painted floral decoration and holds a small cluster of flowers. The softly modeled faces, muted colors and hand-painted details give the piece the distinctive appearance associated with these early American-made Hummel figures.

The underside retains its original dark green felt covering and, importantly, the original gold foil identification label reading “AUTHENTIC HUMMEL FIGURE – PRODUCED BY ARS SACRA – MADE IN U.S.A.”

These early Ars Sacra / Herbert Dubler Hummel figures are an interesting part of Hummel collecting history and differ considerably in construction and appearance from the better-known German Goebel porcelain figurines.

HISTORY

During the 1940s, Herbert Dubler and Ars Sacra produced a distinctive group of Hummel figures in the United States based upon the artwork and characters of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel.

Unlike the familiar German Goebel Hummel figurines made from fired ceramic, these American-made Ars Sacra examples were produced from a softer chalkware or plaster-type composition and were hand painted.

The original Ars Sacra identification labels are particularly important on these pieces because they help establish their association with the Hummel designs and their American production.

PATTERN & DESIGN

This Madonna & Child design presents Mary in a gentle devotional pose, seated with the young Christ Child held securely at her side. Her bowed head and softly modeled expression create a warm and peaceful composition.

The subdued cream and ivory coloring of Mary\'s robe is complemented by the teal-green mantle, while the Child\'s pale green garment features small colorful floral accents. Carefully painted facial features, hair and clothing details add character without overwhelming the soft overall palette.

The combination of its religious subject, early American Hummel production and surviving original Ars Sacra foil label makes this an especially interesting example for collectors of vintage Hummel and religious figurines.
