South West Indigenous Native Americans Hopi/ Zuni fertility Ceremonial wood burned etched (pyrography)Gourd Instrument (seeds inside) with a Woman, Kokopeli and an Eagle depicted on it.Good used condition. The gourd still has the seeds inside and someone has put hot glue at the bottom end to make it free standing or had it displayed as such.
The Kokopeli figure carved into gourds is most closely associated with Hopi and Zuni traditions, both of which have deep cultural roots in the Southwestern United States.
Hopi connectionThe Hopi name for Kokopelli is kokopilau, meaning “wood hump” or “humpbacked flute player” Indigenous Peoples Literature. In Hopi legend, Kokopelli is a fertility deity who carries unborn children on his back and distributes them to women, and who plays his flute to bring spring, rain, and a good harvest 7Wikipedia). His image appears in Hopi rock art, pottery, and ceremonial contexts, and the Hopi are among the most prominent cultures to have preserved his iconography.
Zuni connectionThe Zuni also venerate Kokopelli, often calling him Olowlowishkya (“Rain Priest”). In Zuni belief, he can summon rain at will and is linked to agricultural fertility. Zuni petroglyphs and pictographs frequently depict him, and his image has been found in ceremonial and decorative contexts, including on gourds and other natural materials.
Broader cultural presenceWhile the Hopi and Zuni are the most direct sources of the Kokopeli gourd carving tradition, the figure is also known among other Southwestern Native peoples such as the Taos, Acoma, and some Puebloan groups
