Presented tonight is this veryimpressive Hopi Kachina doll depicting He'e'e Wuhti, the Warrior MaidenKachina. In antiquity, He'e'e was doing her hair up in Hopi maiden swirls, whenshe spotted Paiute warriors about to attack her village. She grabbed a bow andarrows, and managed to hold them off until warriors could arrive and drive offthe attack. Her courage immortalized her as a Kachina, and she is always shownwith disheveled hair. She's a hard Kachina to carve, and many artists won'ttake up the challenge. But she's very exquisitely expressed here by PhilbertPolyestewa, of Moencopi, a respected and very talented carver, who is at thevery apex of his creative skills. This lovely doll stands a 8 inches tall, andis carved from a single piece of Cottonwood root. The fearless expression andaggressive pose make this doll a masterpiece, in my opinion.
