Hand signed 4x6 inch photo by World War II vet, Henry Stanley.

Henry Grady Stanley was a U.S. Army veteran who survived theBataan Death March during World War II. Born on June 12, 1920, in Milan,Georgia, he enlisted in the Army on March 15, 1941, at age 21. He was among approximately 75,000 Americanand Filipino troops who surrendered to Japan on April 2, 1942, after defendingthe Bataan Peninsula.

Stanley endured the 65-mile forced march under brutalconditions, suffering from malaria, dehydration, starvation, and constantthreat of execution. He credited hissurvival to his hardscrabble upbringing and mental resilience, staying awayfrom crowds and avoiding the sides of the road where Japanese soldiers targetedweak prisoners. He arrived at CampO’Donnell in the Philippines six days later, where conditions werehorrific—prisoners received only a trickle of water and were forced to diggraves for their dead comrades.

He spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war, working in a copper mine in Japan, surviving on minimal food and enduringextreme hardship. By the time he wasliberated, he weighed just 70 pounds. Helater recalled the emotional toll of captivity, including lingering fears andtrauma, and only began sharing his story with his family decades after the war.

Stanley lived in Garland, Texas, and remained active inveteran communities, speaking at schools and events to honor the memory ofBataan survivors. He was a member ofmultiple Methodist churches and participated in the Bataan Memorial Death Marchin New Mexico.
