Heavy Metal Magazine — September 1993
A particularly striking 1993 issue of Heavy Metal: The Illustrated Fantasy Magazine, led by Scott Hampton\'s “The Upturned Stone” and featuring Hampton\'s extraordinary cover artwork.
The cover is pure early-\'90s Heavy Metal: an aviator surrounded by an almost archaeological pile of mechanical and biomechanical wreckage, rendered with Hampton\'s beautifully textured, painterly approach. It\'s an image that rewards looking considerably longer than is strictly necessary to sell a magazine.
Inside is the adult science-fiction, fantasy and illustrated storytelling that made Heavy Metal one of the defining American showcases for European and international comics art.
The back cover is also collectible in its own right — an original Heavy Metal house advertisement for Heavy Metal Presents: Soft Ware, prominently featuring Druuna in Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri\'s “Carnivora,” along with work by Arno, Prado and Altuna.
