History of the Lincoln China

• Origin:Shortly after moving into the White House, Mary Todd Lincoln discovered there was not enough matching china for official state dinners. She used a congressional appropriation to order a new state service from the French manufacturerHaviland & Co..
• Design:The pattern features a wide magenta-colored border—a hue then popular in French fashion—edged with a gold rope-like border (often called \"Alhambra\" tracery).
• Central Emblem:The center showcases theGreat Seal of the United States, featuring an American Eagle perched on a shield with the motto \"E Pluribus Unum\" in its beak, set against a backdrop of clouds and a sunburst.
• Legacy:The design was so well-regarded that it was later reordered and used by other administrations, including those of Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, and John F. Kennedy.
