Hand Carved Vintage Ivory Coast Senufo /Bambara Female Sculpture Figure
I recently obtained a collection oftreasures acquired from around the world. The collector (now deceased) was aresident of France. He lived in the United States and worked for a steelcompany located in Germany.
On many of his items I have received atleast two opinions for their origination and value. Unfortunately, they areusually in conflict. I am selling many of the items as vintage (not antique) ,and decorative.
You are looking at a well carved seated female figure in the Bambara or Senufo Tribe style
This carved figure style was used in society rituals,symbolizing fertility, ancestral protection, and the continuity of the community.
These figures are characterized by their complex coiffure with central ridge and tresses,full lips and nose, protruding eyes "C" shaped ears, slightly pendant breasts, hands resting on thighs, protruding abdomen, arlets below shoulders, full thighs and short legs.
This African figure is large and heavy!
