Striking hand-carved wooden relief panel from Palau (Micronesia), depicting a richly detailed coastal scene with multiple figures, ocean life, and traditional island elements.
This piece stands out for its depth of carving and narrative composition—featuring intertwined human and marine imagery, including mermaid-like figures and a turtle, set within a stylized island landscape of mountains, water, and village architecture. The flowing forms and expressive faces give the work a strong sense of movement and storytelling.
Affixed to the reverse is a typed story titled:
“The Discovery of the Egg Laying Cycle of the Turtle”
which provides cultural context and enhances the interpretive value of the piece. Story-backed carvings such as this are increasingly sought after, as the narrative connection is often lost over time.
The panel is carved from a single piece of wood with a natural, organic edge, adding to its authenticity and visual appeal as a display object.
