Desert Ironwood (scientific name: Olneya tesota, also known as palo fierro) is a perennial flowering tree in the legume family (Fabaceae).
Appearance and Growth: It grows as a large shrub or tree, typically reaching about 10 meters (33 feet) tall with trunk diameters averaging 60 cm (24 inches), though it can get larger in protected areas. It has a dense, very hard wood (hence the name \"ironwood\"), which is heavy enough to sink in water. The wood is prized for woodworking, knife handles, and turning due to its rich dark brown to black colors, fine grain, and smooth finish.
Adaptations: Extremely drought-tolerant and long-lived (centuries), thriving in arid conditions.
Where It Is Found - Desert Ironwood is native exclusively to the Sonoran Desert region. Its range closely matches the boundaries of the Sonoran Desert proper in the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
