August 26, 1929, during its historic round-the-world flight. [1, 2]Key Details of the Visit
  • Arrival Date & Time: Landed at 5:35 a.m. on August 26, 1929, after a roughly 79-hour flight from Tokyo, Japan. [1, 2]
A Los Angeles newspaper called it \"the silvery queen of the skies.\" On its round-the-world tour, the German blimp Graf Zeppelin landed in Los Angeles on August 26, 1929, after flying nearly 80 hours from Tokyo. It landed at Mines Field -- the future Los Angeles International Airport. There were many photos taken from a distance and from behind a fence, but this is an unusual close-in image showing men in American uniforms who supervised the landing and possibly escorted the airship, as well as civilian visitors. It also shows in some detail the mooring mast, the \"nest\" basket below the inflatable, and the tricolor [in black and white] German flag. The postcard has a bend [paper integrity still good] on the lower right corner, shown, and a chip at the far left. On the back is brownish smudge, and an inscription in Spanish, with some misspellings. \"The dirigible Zepeling which passed over our house on its way to Germany.\" The writer misspells Zeppelin, and \"harriba\" for the word \"arriba,\" meaning above. He or she writes \"nuestro,\" the masculine adjective, to modify the feminine noun \"casa,\" and rather than the Spanish word for \"Germany,\" which is \"Alemania,\" breaks it into a preposition and a noun -- \"a Lemania.\" The zeppelin did indeed pass over Los Angeles on its one-day stop from Japan back to Lakehurst, New Jersey. From a smoke-free, dog-loving home.
