The Shawnee Pottery Company, Zanesville, Ohio, was active from 1937-1961 in the area which at the time was known as the largest pottery producing region in the country. Shawnee was known for producing a wide range of quality ceramic products, including kitchenware, decorative items, and figurines. This appealing vintage sitting Cat Creamer has an embossed surface representing a shawl-type sweater with a hand-painted red bow and blue stripe. Her smiling face is enhanced with hand-painted whiskers, eyes, ears and nose. Her curved tail doubles as her handle for ease of pouring.
This vintage 1940\'s \"Puss \'n Boots\" Cat Creamer re-introduces a character who first appeared in Europe in the 1500s. The original story, and its early variations, present the cat as a sly creature who used trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand in marriage of a princess for his penniless and low-born master. Through the centuries, however, the cat evolved into a friendly soul now characterized as “cat the helper” to both other animals and to man. A 19th century American expression said to be about Puss’n Boots was that something was “enough to make a cat laugh.” And, indeed, our Cat Creamer is smiling and laughing.
This vintage collectible will brighten breakfast either functioning on the table pouring milk or cream or beaming down from a cupboard.
