Gilt brass Alms Dish with Adam & Eve, Nuremberg Bavaria, Germany, 16th century:
$700.00

This is a excellent example of a "Nuremberg Alms Dish" or basin that was used as a display of wealth for townsfolk, often depicting scenes or designs pressed into them. This is an example of Adam and Eve in the Eden, below the Tree of Wisdom with the crowned serpent. A ring of light Gothic script can be seen around the central depiction - difficult to read due to wear, as it was more detailed and is faded but individual letters can be made out. It is estimated to be from the 16th century (1500's), as these were becoming more popular. Style of craft, wear, materials and depiction directly correspond. The Adam & Eve motif was not uncommon but this is an excellent semi-rare example
Dimensions: 15-1/8" Diameter x 1-1/2" deep
About Nuremberg Alms BasinsThe brass basins, dishes and bowls created in Nuremberg, Bavaria in the 15th, 16th and 17th century are often referred to by collectors as ‘alms dishes’ hence the collective term Nuremberg Alms Dishes. Although Nuremberg was the leading center for base metal production in Europe at the time, the manufacture of brass dishes were also made in Dinant and the surrounding area from Bouvingnes to Aachen, and up to the Netherlands. The Nuremberg brass dishes were exported all over Europe including England. Source: worldcollectorsnet.com
Condition: This was professionally cleaned to remove most of the verdigris, and it did have some small damage to the Eve figure (small holes), along with a wear hole in the left side of the plate rim. Good detail on the garden, showing plants in very light relief. The back side may have some after-crafted punch marks on them, some of which show to the front.
Ships by FedEx, insured, well padded. Dish stand included.
