World\'s First Fatal Zeppelin Disaster Airship, UnpostedDESCRIPTIONAn unused, unposted German photo postcard captioned \"L 1 in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel,\" showing the airship L 1 (Zeppelin works number LZ 14), the Imperial German Navy\'s first Zeppelin. L 1 made its first flight in October 1912 and was based at Luftschiffhafen Fuhlsbüttel, the first hangar and headquarters built for Germany\'s Naval Airship Division. Less than a year later, on September 9, 1913, L 1 was caught in a North Sea thunderstorm and brought down, drowning 14 of its 20-man crew, the world\'s first Zeppelin fatalities and the first fatal Zeppelin disaster on record. This card captures the airship at that same Fuhlsbüttel base before the loss. The reverse is a blank, unused \"Postkarte\" form with the printed An / in / Wohnung address lines never filled in, no stamp affixed, no cancellation, and no message, exactly as it left the printer. Images have been scanned at 600dpi so every printed detail is preserved for your records; this is a single postcard, and the additional images are crops of the same card showing detail.
