George Washington Initiated John Jay Treaty Of 1795 Met With Great Opposition:
$495.00

In 1794, George Washington sent John Jay to London to negotiate terms over British seizures of American ships and military occupation of the American frontier. Jay’s Treaty of 1795 was an agreement between the United States and Great Britain that resolved post-Revolutionary War tensions. Many Americans felt the terms favored the British and protestors burned effigies of John Jay. The pact failed to stop British impressment (forced recruitment) of American sailors or compensate Southerners for lost enslaved people.

BENIAH PALMER was a prominent landowner and a Judge in the late eighteenth century. THEOPHLIUS BEEKMAN was a New York City merchant, a civil official and a member of the prominent Beekman family. Beekman served as an alderman of New York City.

One page, 6 ¼ x 7 ½, ALS, Palmer writes to Beekman on September 1st, 1795, regarding an accounting of payments made by several early New Yorkers and concluding with important information about Jay’s Treaty and opposition to it. Palmer includes information about James Emolt, a highly influential Federalist who served as a U.S. Congressman and Speaker of the New York State Assembly. He also lists a rent payment from Reuben Moore, who was among a group of seafaring men from Massachusetts and Rhode Island who sought safe harbor for their vessels resulting from attacks by the British Navy during and after the Revolutionary War.

Regarding Jay’s Treaty, Palmer writes, “...I wish you would let me know how Mr. Jay’s Treaty sets on the stomachs of our Republican friends at this time. It is here universally reprobated except by a very few indeed. I think there is at least 9/10 of our Country opposed to it.

Irregular top resulting from age chipping. Folds, toning and soiling mostly prevalent on the verso. Old tape repair. A fine example of historic Americana.
