George Benson (1900-1986) handcarved & painted ceremonial paddle featuring an Orca - Tlingit Alaskan Indian culture. Stamped
ProvenanceThis paddle was purchased directly from the artist by me upon meeting him in Sitka in 1971. Please look at photo 10 - A brush hair stuck in the paint-It’s been on this since the day I bought it and I think it’s charming-When you look at the photos, it is not a scratch-The condition is from the day I bought it as it’s been packed away most of my life.
George Benson’ s works are in the collection of The National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. Several of his works are also prominently featured in the Sitka National Historical Park. Mr. Benson was instrumental in reviving traditional Tlingit arts & culture. Reviving traditional Tlingit arts was of major concern to Mr. Benson.
The paddle measures 36” in length & 5” across at the widest point.
