The Great Fire of 1911 struck Bangor, Maine, on April 30 and May 1, 1911, destroying a large portion of the city's downtown and residential districts.
April 30 – May 1, 1911. The fire started in a two-story hay shed owned by J. Frank Green on Broad Street. It was driven by high winds and a very dry spring season, causing flying embers to leap across the Kenduskeag Stream into the downtown business district.
Buildings Lost: About 267 to 285 residences, over 100 business blocks, 6 to 7 churches, Maine's first consecrated synagogue, the Bangor Public Library (losing its entire 70,000-volume collection), the Post Office, Custom House, Norumbega Hall, and Bangor High School.
Financial Loss: Roughly $3.1 million to $3.2 million.
Casualties: Two firefighter deaths (George Abbott and John N. Scribner).
The city rapidly rebuilt its core structures within a few years using brick, steel, and stone, later establishing the Great Fire of 1911 Historic District.
