Description of the lapel: The side shown in the image has the inscription "COLONIAL AND INDIAN EXHIBITION LONDON 1886" surrounded by a crown of oak leaves.
Description of the obverse: The other side (not visible) sports the bust of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII) and executive president of the exhibition, with the inscription "ALBERT EDWARD PRINCE OF WALES EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT".
Creator and manufacture: The medal was engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon and struck in Birmingham by Heaton & Sons.
Use: Approximately 5,000 of these medals were awarded with a diploma to each participant in the exhibition, without the recipient's name inscribing on the medal itself.
Context of the exhibition
The Colonial and Indian Exhibition was inaugurated by Queen Victoria and aimed to "stimulate trade and strengthen ties of union" within the British Empire. The event attracted 5.5 million visitors and featured exhibitions from all regions of the Empire, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and various colonies.
