This is a silver gelatin photograph that is mounted onto a paper page taken from a photo album and is 4½ x 6¼ inches (114x157mm).
It shows five men working around an anvil on the deck of a ship. Three of the men are actively engaged in metalworking, with one holding a piece of metal with tongs while another raises a heavy hammer to strike it. The men are wearing work clothes and dark berets, and large white ship ventilators are visible in the background.
The reverse has a blue ink stamp reading 'Photo C. Chusseau-Flaviens Droits Réservés - Copyright 46 Rue Bayen - Paris'. There is additional printed French text regarding copyright restrictions and a large handwritten word in blue crayon that appears to read 'Marine'. A brown stain is visible on the left side of the reverse.
