Its archives contains 5.5 million photographs, ranging from daguerreotypes to modern digital photos from around the world.
In 1852, Leopoldo Alinari founded a photographic studio. His brothers Giuseppe and Romualdo joined him two years later to establish Fratelli Alinari Fotografi Editori, a photographic workshop dedicated initially to the documentation of notable Italian paintings, sculptures, and architecture. They subsequently expanded the scope of their photographic project to include the towns and landscapes of Italy, as well as portrait photography and images of national costume. The brothers achieved recognition for the quality of their work, and by 1860 their portrait subjects included the Italian royal family.
In the 1920s a publishing house, the Istituto di Edizioni Artistiche, which also later acquired the archives of Giacoma Brogi in Florence and James Anderson in Rome, absorbed the studio. The Alinari studio continues to preserve Italy's cultural treasures through occasional publication of some of the more than one hundred thousand photographs from the Alinari holding. The collection also contains some images of Greece and works of art in museums outside of Italy. The Alinari Museum of the History of Photography opened in Florence in 1985.
