Part A – Grand Trunk Railway/Canadian National Railway

  • Original Railway:Stratford & Huron Railway (Grand Trunk, Georgian Bay & Lake Erie Railway 1881, Grand Trunk Railway 1893, Canadian National Railway 1923) 1882 – 1995
  • Current/Final Railway:Canadian National Railway
  • Location/Address:The station was located on the south side of 7thStreet SW, at 4thAvenue S
  • Railway Mileage:Owen Sound Subdivision 36.7
  • Surrounding Building Context:The founding of the community was based on the establishment of grist and saw mill sites on the Saugeen River, and commercial support for the surrounding agricultural area. The arrival of the railway in 1882 allowed for the community to become a significant regional manufacturer of furniture. Several large multi-storey brick plants were constructed in close proximity to the station, served by spur lines (see map for details). Railway uses near the station included a small yard, stock pens, coal sheds, and a detached freight shed. To the north, the railway crossed over the Saugeen River valley on a high bridge (now converted into a walking trail).

  • Exterior Architecture Details:The station was a single storey frame structure on a stone block base that was covered by a complex hip roof which featured a witches hat over the waiting room and a hexagonal tower that formed part of the operator window
  • Interior Architectural Details:The building contained a passenger waiting room, ticket/operator office and freight/express rooms
  • Landscaping & Ground Details:Cinder platform
  • Building Costs:Unknown
  • Destruction Date:The building was removed from passenger service in 1970, and believed to have been removed in the late 1970’s
