FogCity Comics #3, June 1979, Rand Holmes, Funny Animals, Stampart, CanadianUnderground Comic
The third and final issue of Fog City Comicsretains the science fiction theme of the second issue but improves the content.Especially enjoyable, though out of touch with the science fiction theme, isRand Holmes\'s \"And Here He is...the Artist Himself,\" in which we geta glimpse of Holmes at home in his studio, battling (and ultimately slaying)the personification of censorship. I imagine that the magnificent splash pagefor the story, which shows Holmes sitting at his drafting table, is an accuratedepiction of his home studio back in the day.
One can only mourn the fact that Fog Citywasn\'t able to produce this quality of stuff in its first two issues.Regardless, the Holmes story alone elevates my review score by a point or eventwo, and is worth whatever you might have to pay (which won\'t be much, trustme) to get it.
Fog City Comics is a three-issue anthologypublished in Vancouver (the fog city, get it?) by Stampart. They are notablefor giving us three terrific Rand Holmes covers and one Holmes story in each ofthe books. Edited by Terry Hamilton (for at least the first two issues, notsure about the third), the series is not one of the stronger contributions tothe post-golden-era underground ouevre, but there are certainly some gems to befound.
The first issue features funny animal storiesthroughout, a theme that has seen its share of failures in the past and this isprobably one of them. The second issue switches to science fiction/fantasy andfares only marginally better. The story from Holmes is one of his weakerefforts (practically unheard of from Rand Holmes) but Brent Boates has a prettygood opening tale. The third issue is 68 pages and easily the best of theseries, with a brilliant self-reflective story from Holmes, an epic tale fromGeorge Metzger, and several decent contributions from Brent Boates.
It\'s a shame that Fog City Comics was prettyforgettable, being produced in Canada with native artists and all, but theseries is still essential to fans of Rand Holmes (and anyone who is not aHolmes fan is a moron).

There was alittle store off Bleecker that specialized in underground comics. EveryFriday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest versionjust hitting the shelves. With several of my hippy friends grooving, andlaughing over Comics, we’d sit around that smoke-filled room, sometimes lateinto the night.Fast forward, some fifty years later–my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in theback of our storage locker. It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds ofunderground comics that had only been read once, were in beautifulcondition. It felt like we discovered a pot of gold. We wrote todozens of book and comic stores with a list of our inventory. They said, there was no interest, no market and offered us little to nothing for thecollection. We explained to them that these were complete sets, first editions. To the retail outlets they were worthless, but to us they were priceless. Now we offer them on E-Bay and the collectors are grabbing them up, at our morethan fair and reasonable prices. Many we had universally certified withCGC, so you’ll know we’re trustworthy, reliable and have the best ofservice. Just check the response and reviews to know we’re honest andresponsible. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and hopeyou buy them now while they still are available. First come, firstserve. Thank you again for your time and interest.
