An unlikely hero, former college professor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain led the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment in many of the fiercest battles of the Eastern theatre, winning the Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership at Gettysburg\'s Little Round Top.It was 1865 and the Army of the Potomac - in front of Petersburg, Virginia was outmaneuvering a beleaguered enemy. In this extraordinary memoir, General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of the Fifth Corps records the dramatic final acts of the Civil War. With superb eloquence, Chamberlain describes the troop movements, the chaos of battle, and the soul of a Union army under the confident command of General U. S. Grant. Here is an unmatched portrait of the war\'s final campaign - that sealed the South\'s defeat and sent two armies home to a nation changed forever.
From my private library, the book is handsomely bound in blue cloth with a gold title and Fifth Corps Badge on the spine. This book was a 1915 presentation to a Mrs Brooks from Mr. Charles T. Gallagher. The presentation was hand written on the book\'s frontpage. I have included a transcript of the presentation remarks as the last sale photograph. It has solid binding throughout. The pages are in excellent condition with little to no foxing. The exterior cover has minor wear consistent with a 106 year old book.
