Extremely Rare 1885 ABC Instructional/Advertising Booklet: Grand Rapids, MI:
$165.00

This booklet served two functions. It was designed for parents to help their children learn their ABCs and cursive handwriting BUT each letter was sponsored by a local Grand Rapids business.

Inside the cover page is a list of cursive examples of upper and lower case letters.

Each individual page has two letters. Next to each letter is a poem that starts with a memory device (“A is for Apple”) followed by the rest of the poem. Cleverly, the discussion moves from artist to photographe rto the sponsor of the letter, in this case a local photography studio.

XYZ was a little more difficult and a bit of a stretch, but the author sort of made it work.

On the back cover is a full page ad for Tower Clothing Company.

The booklet measures 7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches. The cover is loose and two of the pages have some staining at the bottom, but it doesn’t interfere with the graphics.

It was printed in Battle Creek.

It’s made of a type of newsprint and has a great lithographed cover of a mother teaching the ABCs to her daughter.

Without a doubt , this booklet is an amazing rarity, bot only for its method of instruction, but the way the instruction led into an advertisement.
