Edward S. Curtis A Diegueño of Capitan Grande 1926 Folio Photogravure Cardozo:
$2880.00

Edward S. Curtis, A Diegueño of Capitan Grande. A large folio photogravure from the late volumes of The North American Indian, showing an elderly man of the Capitan Grande Reservation. The Kumeyaay people were called Diegueño in Curtis\'s day. Photographed in 1924 and published in 1926 in Portfolio XV, the Southern California installment.

This is Curtis\'s late portrait style: tight framing, raking light, and the continuous tone of photogravure carrying every strand of hair and beard against a deep umber ground. Within a decade of the sitting, the Capitan Grande community was displaced by the construction of El Capitan Reservoir, and families relocated to what became the Barona and Viejas reservations.

A vintage impression from the original 1907 to 1930 publication, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, on the heavy cream wove sheet the Cardozo Collection catalogs as Holland Van Gelder, one of the three papers used for original subscriber sets. Full margins, natural deckled edges and a crisp intaglio plate mark. Not a 1970s restrike; those were printed on modern papers such as Arches and Rives BFK.

Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. Cardozo (1948 to 2021) was the leading Curtis collector, dealer and scholar of his generation and the author of Sacred Legacy. The sheet keeps its Cardozo inventory number, CCI-1708, in pencil on the verso, with the collection\'s cataloging label.

Sheet 18 x 22 in. Unframed and ready to frame.
