The goal was to offer a variety of flavored soft drinks to complement the company\'s existing cola product.
Ownership and Brand Evolution: In 1928, due to the success of Nehi\'s fruit flavors (like grape, orange, and peach), the company renamed itself the Nehi Corporation. During the 1930s, Nehi became widely known for its colorful and flavorful sodas, and for its distinctive advertising (often cheeky and memorable). A famous spokesman for Nehi was Robert Ripley of Ripley\'s Believe It or Not, and the brand also used popular pin-up models in its advertising.
Royal Crown Cola Connection: In 1934, the company launched Royal Crown Cola (RC Cola), a cola drink that eventually gained significant popularity. By 1955, due to RC Cola\'s success, the company changed its name again — this time to Royal Crown Cola Company. From this point, Nehi became more of a sub-brand under the RC umbrella.
Decline and Later Years: As RC Cola and other major soft drink brands (like Coca-Cola and Pepsi) took center stage, Nehi\'s popularity waned. The Nehi name was eventually phased out in many regions but remained in nostalgic or specialty markets. Dr Pepper Snapple Group (now part of Keurig Dr Pepper) eventually became the owner of the RC Cola and Nehi brands through a series of acquisitions and mergers.
Flavors and Legacy: Popular Nehi flavors included grape, orange, peach, and strawberry. Nehi Grape in particular became something of a cultural icon, even referenced in shows like MASH* (Radar O’Reilly was a fan). Today, Nehi is still occasionally produced and sold, particularly by specialty bottlers or retro-themed beverage companies.
