This exceptional handwoven tribal wool furniture coveris a remarkable example of village textile craftsmanship from the Ottomancultural world, most likely western Anatolia (Turkey) or the neighboring Balkanregion. Dating to approximately 1900–1940, it represents the kind of carefullywoven household textile that was both functional and deeply personal—oftencreated over many months for a family\'s finest furnishings and, in some cases,as part of a young woman\'s wedding dowry.
This textile waspurpose-made as a furniture covering. It is assembled from five individuallyhandwoven narrow loom-width panels, each displaying its own unique striped pattern and decorative motifs. The panels have been meticulously sewn byhand with contrasting decorative overcast stitching, a technique typical of the Balkans. The impressivetextile measuring approximately 102 inches long and about 55 inches wide, witha shaped 13-inch front drop designed to drape elegantly over a divan, bedding platform, or treasured household belongings.
The vivid colors remain remarkably fresh and saturated, suggesting this piece was carefully preserved and treasured throughout itslife. The rich palette includes scarlet red, vermilion, black, charcoal gray, olive green, sage green, aubergine purple, indigo violet, raspberry, magenta, coral, golden ochre, turquoise, and soft cream accents. These brilliant colors, combined with the subtle variations from panel to panel, create a sophisticatedcomposition.
Each strip demonstrates slightly different weavingarrangements, a hallmark of authentic village weaving traditions where textileswere woven on narrow household looms before being expertly joined by hand.Decorative supplementary-weft brocaded motifs—including floral rosettes, tinydiamonds, hooked protective motifs, and geometric tribal symbols—are woventhroughout the stripes, adding texture and visual richness without overwhelmingthe overall design.
Although its exact tribal origin is unknown, the weavingtechniques, construction, colors, and overall design are consistent withvillage textiles from western Anatolia and the Balkan regions that wereinfluenced by the Ottoman Empire. These traditional Turkish yüklük (beddingcupboard) covers or sedir (divan) covers served both a practical and a decorativerole within the home.
Today, this textile makes an extraordinary decorativestatement while preserving an important piece of traditional weaving history.Whether displayed over a bed, large dining table, daybed, bench, or antiquechest, it immediately becomes the focal point of a room.
