Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Charlot Dickens. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1830 give or take a couple of years. This sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket flanked by floral motifs and a further flower basket and a floral motif below which has a fruit bush, fruit tree and two floral motifs to both sides. There is a linked border below the central floral motif with a flower to both sides, whilst the middle section of the linen contains a charming two storey house with side annexes which have a woman and her husband standing above with a dog standing in front of the right side annexe. The figures have a tree and flowers beside them with a floral motif next to the left side annexe and a fruit tree by the annexe on the right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a narrow zigzag edged plaque surrounding Charlot\'s name with a floral motif and fruit basket to the left, a flower bowl and peacock to the right and a two floral motifs below. The left side floral motif has a flower bowl and cockerel next to it whilst the right side floral motif has a lozenge motif and two floral motifs nearby. The bottom edge of the linen then has various floral motifs running across it.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining and a few very small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler appears to be sitting on card or paper. The sampler is behindglass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the coloursof the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 20th century ebonised frame with gilt detailing around the outer and inner edges. The frame is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.
Measures 14 1/4\" across x 14 3/4\" and 15 1/4\" x 15 3/4\" overall.

AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS APPEAR SOMEWHAT DARK OR HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT\'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
