Overview
Swissair, the Swiss national airline, was founded on March 26, 1931 by the merger of Ad Astra and Balair. The registration HB-IRA is legible on the tail, and the verso notation matches it.
HB-IRA was Swissair's first DC-3 and flagship of the fleet, delivered from Fokker's Schiphol assembly line on June 10, 1937. The airline paid 527,000 Swiss francs for it.
It was retired in 1955 and sold to Ozark. A period photograph of HB-IRA is held in the Swiss Museum of Transport's collection.What to Know
