The Walt Disney Company, commonly referred to as simply Disney, is an American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerateheadquartered at the Walt Disney Studios complex in Burbank, California. Disney was founded on October 16, 1923 as an animation studio, by brothers Walt Disney and Roy Oliver Disney as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio; it later operated under the names Walt Disney Studio and Walt Disney Productions before adopting its current name in 1986. In 1928, Disney established itself as a leader in the animation industry with the short film Steamboat Willie. The film used synchronized sound to become the first post-produced sound cartoon, and popularized Mickey Mouse, who became Disney's mascot and corporate icon.

Mickey Mouse is an animated cartoon character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. A cheerful and plucky anthropomorphic mouse, Mickey made his first public appearance in Steamboat Willie, on November 18, 1928. Estimated as standing 2' 3" (68.58 centimeters) and weighing 23 pounds (10.43 kilograms), Mickey is easily identified by his round ears, red shorts, white gloves, and yellow shoes. He speaks in a falsetto voice, and his speech is typically infused with 1930s slang like "swell" and "gee". The essence of Mickey's character is that of an underdog who, despite being small and vulnerable, overcomes larger-than-life adversity through quick wit and a can-do spirit.

Mickey was popularized by his long-running short film series. His simplistic, "rubberhose" design allows for both relatable emotion, and exaggerated physical gags. Mickey's versatility, meanwhile, enables him to slip into any profession, location, or time period, while maintaining his core characteristics. Mickey steadily branched into other mediums over the years, beginning with a comic strip by cartoonist Floyd Gottfredson in 1930. In 1940, Mickey made his feature-length film debut with Fantasia, for which he was given his modern redesign by animator Fred Moore. In the 1950s, Mickey became a television mainstay with the premiere of 1955's The Mickey Mouse Club, as well as an icon for the Disney theme parks with the opening of Disneyland. Mickey has also featured prominently in critically acclaimed video games, such as 1990's Castle of Illusion and the Kingdom Hearts series.

Upon his inception, Mickey rapidly rose to the pinnacle of American culture, becoming the most popular and recognizable cartoon character in the world, and the prime influence of following cartoons. The character was especially treasured by Walt Disney, himself. The two were widely regarded as "alter-egos" by peers and historians, a perception supported by Walt originating Mickey's voice. Disney once attributed his success to the advent of Mickey, famously proclaiming that, "it was all started by a mouse".

As its most famous character, Mickey serves as the mascot of The Walt Disney Company. He has appeared in over 130 films, for which he received numerous accolades. In 1932, Walt Disney was presented an honorary Academy Award for the creation of Mickey Mouse. In 1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Today, Mickey stands as the highest-grossing animated character of all time, and the 4th highest-grossing media franchise overall.

Minnie Mouse is an animated cartoon character created by Walt Disney. She is the longtime girlfriend of Mickey Mouse, known for her sweet disposition, large head bows and polka-dotted dresses. Inspired by flapper girls of the 1920s, Minnie made her public debut in the short Steamboat Willie on November 18, 1928. Her first spoken words, "Yoo-hoo!", have become a signature catchphrase synonymous with the character.

Minnie is traditionally depicted as a starving musician, singer and songwriter. Her classy, yet no-nonsense demeanor acts as a foil to the troublemaking Mickey. Throughout the 1930s, Minnie was a frequent participant in Mickey's adventures, often serving as the damsel-in-distress at the hands of the villainous Peg-Leg Pete. In the 1940s, Minnie was relegated to bit parts in cartoons starring her kitten, Figaro, and Mickey's dog, Pluto. By the 1950s, she faded into obscurity altogether, and remained dormant for decades.

Minnie was revitalized with the premiere of the 1988 television special Totally Minnie, her first starring role. Since then, she has endured as one of Disney's most popular and significant characters. Typically partnered with her best friends, Daisy Duck and Clarabelle Cow, Minnie has headlined her own cartoons, such as in Mickey Mouse Works, Minnie's Bow-Toons and Electric Holiday. Paul Rudish's series of shorts developed Minnie's comedic potential by highlighting her impulsivity and spunk while maintaining the character's endearing demeanor.

In 2018, Minnie was recognized for her contributions to animation with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Recently, she has also been featured as a fashion icon at such events as New York Fashion Week and the Fashion Awards in Los Angeles. She additionally serves as the figurehead of the Rock the Dots apparel and merchandise promotions—inspired by her affinity for polka dots.

Donald Duck (or simply referred to as "The Duck" is an animated cartoon character created by Walt Disney as a foil to Mickey Mouse. Making his screen debut in The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934, Donald is characterized as a cocky showboat with a brash and juvenile personality. He is normally depicted wearing a sailor suit, cap and a bow tie. Along with his semi-unintelligible voice (as famously created by his original voice actor, Clarence "Ducky" Nash), Donald's most dominant trait is his short temper, which is predominantly expressed through explosive tantrums and fits of quacking and squawking. Much of Donald's anger stems from his exceptionally bad luck, though his misfortunes are often the karmic result of his own arrogance and greed.

Donald garnered universal acclaim as early as his second appearance in Orphan's Benefit and quickly became a mainstay in Disney's short films thereafter. His foibles endeared him to audiences, who found the duck's attitude to be both relatable and entertaining. Animators and story artists were also fond of Donald, as the character was allowed to exhibit more negative traits that couldn't be bestowed upon Mickey or the happy-go-lucky Goofy. Beginning with 1937's Don Donald, Donald earned his own series of cartoons, which would introduce several recurring characters, such as his girlfriend Daisy Duck, and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

Having starred in over 190 films, Donald has appeared in more theatrical films than any other Disney character. Several of his cartoons were honored by the Academy Awards, while other notable accolades include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and cemented footprints at the Chinese Theatre. Part of Donald's widespread popularity can be attributed to his long-running comic book series under the supervision of renowned artists, such as Ted Osborne, Al Taliaferro, Carl Barks, and Don Rosa. These stories depict Donald as living in the city of Duckburg and have been enjoyed by generations of readers on a global scale.
