Precious vintage set of Dionne Quintuplet collector spoons made by Carlton circa the 1930s. This silver plated set includes 4 sisters: Cecile, Emilie, Marie, Yvonne with their names on the handles. They measure 6\" tall.
The identical quintuplet girls were, in order of birth:
- Yvonne Édouilda Marie Dionne (died 2001)
- Annette Lillianne Marie Allard (living)
- Cécile Marie Émilda Langlois (living)
- Émilie Marie Jeanne Dionne (died 1954)
- Marie Reine Alma Houle (died 1970)
: The story of the Dionne sisters is fascinating in a sad way - they were the first known quintuplet set in the world to have survived their infancy. The identical girls were born May 28, 1934 just outside Callander, Ontario to a farming family. Eventually, custody of the girls was given to the Red Cross and then the government for their care. The Ontario provincial government then chose to profit on their fame, by making them a significant tourist attraction. Approximately 3000 people would come daily to view the girls at the Dafoe Hospital - a compound built by the government - and designed to showcase the Quintuplets. This public observation structure allowed tourists to observe the sisters (and their nurse care-givers) behind one-way screens. These particular spoons were a marketing effort by Palmolive, whereby collectors would spend an extra 10cents for a spoon if they bought soap products.
