This is a fun Demon / Devil Clay mask from Ocumichoa town belonging to the Purépecha indigenous community, located in Michoacán. This mask is covered with Serpents or Snakes and large fangs. This particular mask was made by a young artist by the name of Eduardo Victor Esteban, his mother is Angela Esteban a very well known potter from Ocumicho. This piece is entirely hand made and hand painted and would make a great gift for the Mexican Folk Art Collector. I will be listing more pieces by Eduardo in the coming days, sogo to my store for a larger selection.....
"Ocumicho is a small town in the highlands where women shape and paint clay figures of red devils, and they do not make them frightening. Their devils ride motorcycles, play guitars, sit at tables and fly in airplanes, and sometimes get pulled along by mermaids. They grin. They look like they are having a wonderful time. The tradition is not ancient in the way people expect, and that is part of what makes it so compelling. Over the second half of the twentieth century, Ocumicho potters turned the fears and gossip of a village into playful clay, mixing the Catholic devil with modern life and bold imagination. The figures are fired and painted in bright colors, and collectors around the world seek them out.It is a reminder that folk art does not stand still. It keeps taking in whatever the world puts in front of it."It measures; 7 1/2inches tall & 9 1/2 inches wide & 3 3/4inches deep.
