This piece is traditionally known as a Cuchimilco (or pair of Cuchimilcos), representative of the Chancay Culture, which flourished in the Chancay and Huaral valleys. These Cuchimilcos functioned as sound instruments (anthropomorphic ocarinas/whistles), recognizable by the tonal holes in their bodies. They represent a male and female duality, with open arms in a ritual/welcoming position, geometric headdresses, and decorations in brown/reddish paint on a light slip, typical of the Chancay style. A pair of anthropomorphic ceramic figures in the Cuchimilco style, representative of the archaeological tradition of the Chancay Culture (Huaral/Chancay Valley, Peru). Both pieces function as ceremonial clay ocarinas/whistles, hand-decorated with mineral pigments in earth and reddish tones on a light slip. They represent complementary duality (masculine and feminine) with outstretched arms in a ritual attitude of welcome/offering, traditional headdresses with zigzag geometric motifs, and painted body details. Handmade by Peruvian artisans of the Huaral culture.
