The ad design is credited in the corner cartouche to Charles Austin Bates of New York, one of the most influential advertising copy designers and theorists of the 1890s, whose textbooks on advertising copy defined the field. Bates was considered the leading American advertising authority of his era and is genuinely collected by advertising history enthusiasts.

The ad runs with the headline \"The kind that do not stretch\" in large display type alongside a halftone photograph of a corseted woman holding a fan. The diagonal composition with elaborate Victorian acanthus scroll ornament in the corner is very much in Bates\'s bold graphic style. The copy promotes corset model No. 397 at one dollar with a money-back guarantee through 10,000 stores nationally, an early example of what we now call direct-response advertising. The reverse carries different magazine content confirming the 1899 date.
