Civil War CDV Gen. Joseph Hooker Brady Anthony Backmark Gold Border 2c Tax Stamp

Civil War CDV Gen. Joseph Hooker Brady Anthony Backmark Gold Border 2c Tax Stamp

Offered for sale is a premier, investment-grade Carte de Visite (CDV) featuring one of the most prominent, notable, and fiercely debated military commanders of the Union Army, Major General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker. This specific card is highly desirable because it retains the prestigious E. & H.T. Anthony backmark, an intact Civil War internal revenue stamp, pristine metallic borders, and matching period historical identifications on both sides. It is a textbook specimen for advanced collectors of 19th-century military photography, Mathew Brady studio portraiture, or revenue philately.Key Features & Premium Physical Attributes:
  • Metallic Gold Border Accent:The front of the card stock features the classic, brilliant metallic gold rules bordering the albumen portrait. These metallic accents are completely untrimmed and show remarkable vibrancy, lacking the heavy edge wear or severe clipping typical of cards forced into Victorian leather album slots.
  • Double-Sided Period Hand Identification:This piece features matching 19th-century historical pencil identification markings by a contemporary hand. The front border bears a crisp period handwritten ID identifying the general, perfectly mirroring the faint, elegant vintage script on the reverse which reads "Gen. Hooker" and "New".
  • Elite Publisher Pedigree:The reverse boasts a bold, beautifully framed publisher imprint from the world-renowned firm E. & H.T. Anthony, operating from 501 Broadway, New York. This photograph was struck directly from an original wartime glass plate negative captured by Mathew Brady’s National Portrait Gallery.
  • Civil War Revenue Tax Stamp:Neatly affixed to the reverse is a bright, intact 2-cent orange Internal Revenue proprietary tax stamp. The stamp features a bold, period hand-canceled ink "X" crossing. This element strictly dates the physical production of this card to the federal luxury tax enforcement window between August 1864 and August 1866, placing its manufacture right at the climax or immediate aftermath of the war.

Major General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker (1814–1879) Born in Hadley, Massachusetts, and graduating from West Point in 1837, Joseph Hooker was a fearless, aggressive combat officer who earned three brevet promotions in the Mexican-American War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union as a brigadier general, quickly gaining a reputation for fierce battlefield bravado at Williamsburg, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, which earned him the permanent press moniker "Fighting Joe."

In early 1863, Abraham Lincoln placed Hooker in command of the massive Army of the Potomac. Hooker brilliantly reorganized the demoralized army and devised an ambitious, masterful flanking strategy to crush the Confederacy. However, his plans were famously thwarted by Robert E. Lee’s legendary, daring division of forces at the Battle of Chancellorsville, where Hooker lost his nerve following a concussive injury.Though he resigned his command just three days prior to the Battle of Gettysburg over a reinforcement dispute, Hooker transferred west and successfully redeemed his military standing. He led the dramatic "Battle Above the Clouds" to help break the siege of Chattanooga and fought capably through the Atlanta Campaign, cementing his place as one of the most iconic, widely recognized, and highly studied figures of the American Civil War.Condition Report:
Graded as Extremely Fine. The card boasts exceptional paper stability, crisp square corners, and bright albumen tones with only very light handling. The reverse is clean, completely free of modern adhesive marks, paper loss, or water damage.Shipping & Handling:
The CDV will be packed in a a clear rigid top loader with tracking.
