Vintage silverplate cigarette box engraved:
“Recuerdo de ULTIMA HORA
Palma de Mallorca”
Translated: “Souvenir of Última Hora, Palma de Mallorca.”
Última Hora is a long-running Spanish newspaper based in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. This piece was likely produced as a commemorative or promotional desk accessory, possibly given during a press event, milestone celebration, or professional exchange.
Form and construction strongly suggest this was originally intended as a mid-century cigarette box — a common executive desk accessory in newspaper offices during the 1950s–1970s. The hinged lid, upright rectangular shape, and unlined interior are consistent with period cigarette storage cases.
The exterior features heavy repoussé floral scrollwork on all sides and lid, with a central monogram on top. The engraving panel adds significant historical interest.
Provenance:
From the estate of a lifelong printing and publishing industry professional. My father traveled to Spain multiple times in the late 1960s during his career in the newspaper and printing field, and this piece was preserved among his professional memorabilia collection.
