Chinese Antique Green Jade Leaping Fish with Lotus and Aquatic Foliage
A finely carved antique Chinese jade sculpture of a powerful leaping fish rising among lotus and aquatic plants, executed in beautiful translucent pale-to-medium green jade with natural color variation and an excellent polished surface. The fish is rendered with meticulous detail: overlapping scales, articulated fins, gills, and a strong, dynamic pose that conveys movement and vitality. Openwork and undercut foliage at the crown and base add depth and lightness to the composition, while a small spherical element crowns the leafy top.
The subject is rich in traditional Chinese symbolism. The carp leaping toward success recalls the Dragon Gate legend of perseverance and achievement, while the lotus and aquatic plants evoke purity, abundance, and continuous prosperity (niannian youyu — “may you have plenty year after year”). Together they form a classic auspicious motif prized by collectors of Chinese decorative arts.
The carving is presented on its original conforming reddish-brown wooden stand, which elevates and complements the jade beautifully.
Provenance
The lifetime estate collection of the late Dr. Boris Frid (1930–2017) and Dr. Germaine Frid (1932–2025), Palm Springs, California.
