The 1920s and 1930s were a period in Chinese history that was unique and dramatically different than what was to come. Unlike the difficulties faced by most of the western world during the Great Depression, China enjoyed a boom in its consumer markets unlike anything that had been seen before. Activity was centered in Shanghai but involved many other parts of the country as well.
Advertising posters were pasted on buildings and walls in China during this period to reflect the prosperity of the era. The most notable posters advertised cigarettes and liquor, including portraits of beautiful women along with the advertised products and luxury settings. The posters show a once thriving face of China, they have become a cultural treasure favored by collectors, not just in China, but around the entire world. During the Cultural Revolution these posters were considered decadent and were among the many things destroyed.
Some of these posters survived, hidden away for years until late in the 20 th Century. Our partner, David has worked and lived in China since 1990s, allowing him to travel around China to find sources of original posters as they slowly emerged from family and business storage. He began with a few but was able over years to acquire a large collection that Four Seasons Art is proud to now offer. These posters were bought a decade or more ago from only honest and reliable sellers of the old, original posters in China. All the posters show signs of their age; we consider that a positive since we more recently have entered the era of new copies being printed.
