This is a vintage Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) depicting El Caracol, the famous ancient Mayan observatory at the ruins of Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico. The black-and-white photographic image beautifully captures the iconic cylindrical domed tower rising above its broad terraced stone platform, with a grand staircase ascending at the left and lush tropical tree branches framing the top of the composition. The caption printed on the front reads \'EL CARACOL RUINAS DE CHICHEN-ITZA MERIDA, YUC.\' confirming the subject and location. El Caracol, meaning \'the snail\' in Spanish — a reference to the spiral staircase inside — was used by the Maya to observe astronomical events, particularly the movements of Venus. This structure is one of the most recognizable and scientifically significant buildings at the Chichen Itza site, which is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The card is a Real Photo Postcard (RPPC), produced from an actual photographic negative on photographic paper, lending it exceptional detail and clarity. The back is formatted as a \'Tarjeta Postal\' (Spanish for postcard) with a divided back layout, a message area on the left, and an address area on the right with lines for the stamp.
