Underground Railroad & Cataract House:- AI Generated: (NOT confirmed / simply a copy & paste by me)The Cataract House was a hotel in the neighborhood of Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls, New York. The hotel was established in 1825 but destroyed by fire in 1945.It was a major stop on the Underground Railroad-- MORE BELOW -- and it was the largest hotel in Niagara Falls. The hotel\'s name refers to the large and powerful waterfall next to property. The Cataract House was a premier, luxury hotel located on the riverbank in Niagara Falls, New York. The Cataract was considered \"the most elegant and popular hotel on the American side.\" It was host to Abraham Lincoln, Jenny Lind, Horace Greeley, William Seward, Franklin D. Roosevelt, King Edward VII (when he was the Prince of Wales), and King George V in 1939.
Beyond its prominence as a resort destination for wealthy tourists, politicians, and international royalty, the hotel holds immense historical significance for its role in American history:• Underground Railroad Station: In the decades leading up to the Civil War, the Cataract House served as one of the most important hubs on the Underground Railroad.
• The Heroic Waitstaff: The hotel employed a predominantly African American waitstaff, many of whom were formerly enslaved individuals. Operating right under the noses of visiting Southern slaveholders, head waiter John Morrison and his team organized a highly sophisticated network. They secretly guided enslaved people down to the gorge and ferried them across the treacherous Niagara River to freedom in Canada.
• The Proprietors: As printed on your vintage trade card, the hotel was leased and managed under the firm Whitney, Jerauld & Co. starting in 1846. This partnership consisted of Solon Whitney (son of early owner Parkhurst Whitney) and his brothers-in-law, Dexter Ray Jerauld and James Fullerton Trott.
• Destruction: The historic hotel structure operated for over a century until it was completely destroyed by a massive fire on October 14, 1945.
Today, the site is recognized as a protected historical landmark, and the surrounding pocket park was officially renamed Cataract House Park to honor the bravery of the staff who risked their lives to help others escape to freedom• The Scene: The central oval features a meticulous lithograph engraving of the Terrapin Tower, a famous stone lighthouse structure built in 1833 directly on the edge of the Horseshoe Falls. It served as a major tourist attraction until it was intentionally blown up with gunpowder in 1873 due to safety concerns.
