The patch is a modern replica of the first patch worn by California State Park Lifeguards in the 1950s. It was producedas part of the CSP Lifeguard 50th anniversary in 2000 and again for the 75th Anniversary in 2025.

State Park Lifeguards are open-water lifesaving professionals and trained peace officers with statewide authority. They help operate and manage state park units including coastal beaches, inland lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. There are both permanent and seasonal SP Lifeguards.
