CIVIL WAR WILMINGTON NORTH CAROLINA DOUBLE LETTER 4TH NEW HAMPSHIRE SOLDIER 1865: $145.00
The 4th New Hampshire Volunteers served 3 years in the War with combat losses at the Battle of Fort Fisher including the death of the Colonel in the Feb 15th assault. An Original Civil War Letter from Lt Gay, in "Camp 4th Regt NH Vols, Near Wilmington, NC, March 13m 1865, written a few weeks after the Fall of the City, to his sister Eveline- He writes that all is quiet, the men are preparing to vote in the election, he has sent Brother Lons (Alonzo Gay) his papers home and asks if Charlie is home yet, he himself can't come home yet. The 2nd Letter on the reverse side of the 8 x 14" sheet is written the same day in red ink, this one to his wife "Dear offerdie" thanks her for the stamps but got some when he went down to the City, he can't write again until he gets his pay, he remains ever "Your Husband Leonard A. Gay 1st Lieut of the 4th NV Vols". Comes w his service record- The 4th also took part in actions at Little Washington and Magnolia, NC as well as the Battle of Crater, Deep Bottom and Drewry's Bluff near Petersburg, Virginia. The letter comes with a typed Transcript. 2pp 8 x 14", edge cuts, age stains, archival repair on reverse side, Overall VG.
