Nottoway Court House was located at historic Nottoway County, Virginia, and on the route of the Southside Railroad that supplied Lee's Army,. In April 1865 Confederate General Longstreet's forces entrenched to oppose the oncoming Federal Army at Ricke's Station, just south of the county line, for control of the Southside Railroad before retreating to nearby Saylor's Creek and Appomattox. An Original Telegram sent bty the US Military Telegraph at "Nottoway, CH", July 2, 1865 by Captain W.W Reals to Lt A.M.C. Smith, reporting that he has taken 2 "public horses" from a citizen who already had his allotment and will be given to 'one who needs them". At this time The Federal Army, by command of General Grant was returning surplus horses to Southern farmers, to enable them to sow their crops.
