The 1st Michigan Lancers, also known as Rankin\'s Lancers formed in 1861 was created by Colonel Arthur Rankin, a veteran of the elite Royal Lancers of Canada. Colonel Rankin funded the unique Lancer uniform, and the men were armed with lances, carbines, dragoon revolvers and sabers. The US War Department refused to accept the unit into the Union Army and it disbanded in March, 1862.
