General Richard Taylor surrendered the Confederate Forces of the Transmississippi to General ERS Canby and fighting ended in Louisiana & Texas. General Canby, aware of the widespread hunger & need to plant spring crops,issued Order # 59 on May 25, 1865, the day before the Transmississippi Surrender, at HQ Military Division of West Mississippi, New Orleans, allowing Union commanders to loan captured transport (Confederate Army horses and mules ) to the \"destitute inhabitants\" for the purposes of cultivation. 1p 8 x 5\" ptd. 2 punch holes in left margin, age and edge wear, Overall VG. The Order is from the estate of Captain George L Faxon, veteran of the 38th Massachusetts Infantry and of the 77th US Colored Infantry and the 10th US Colored Heavy Artillery who served in Louisiana 1863 to 1866.
