CIVIL WAR LETTER FORT SCOTT VIRGINIA- A CONNECTICUT SOLDIER'S GRIEF For Sale

A moving letter from a soldier to his mother on learning of the death of his father, and asking for her account of his death.
The Civil War Letter is from George F Elliott at Fort Scott, Virginia to Mother, January 22, 1862, telling her that Brother James has just been here with a telegraphic dispatch of the Death of Father, "just as I had written the last sentence in a letter to Father".
He reports that James has tried to obtain a furlough for us to attend the Funeral but it was beyond the power of our Col. to grant as he had Orders from General McClellan not to grant any furloughs on any account.
He asks her to please tell him about Father's death and the circumstances attending it. The Elliott family Father was a Colt Armory worker, and broken-hearted by the earlier desertion of their youngest Brother Edward Augustus Elliott from the 5th Connecticut "Colt Rifle Regiment" was impoverished by attorney's fees in his efforts to return him to service. The son was reported to have gone to Canada, but the family letters and archives have no further indication that he ever returned home after the War. He signs "I remain as ever Your Affectionate Son George F. Elliott", with a postscript: "You will find the letter that I had just written to Father enclosed with this, and for her to please tell him and James of the "Necessities" of the Family, what it is best to do, and whether Father was much in Debt.
