Early in the War Illinois was concerned that men of the southern of counties would join the Confederacy. In response the state of Illinois formed volunteer regiments to create the "The Kentucky Brigade", eventually forming 7 or 8 such units. An Original Civil War Undated ink letter on onionskin from Adjutant Allen C Fuller, to Captain CB Watson , mustering officer , Springfield, Illinois- I 1862 the War Department has directed him to organize 4 regiments of infantry to be known as the "Kentucky Brigade" under the authority of Dr William H Chandler, of Coles County,to be formed almost exclusively of citizens residing in the Southern Counties of the State, with recruits to report to camp at Jonesboro, Illinoisto complete their regimental organizations. . Adjutant Fuller also requests, as directed by the Governor that sustenance be provided to the troops in the camp, and Colonel directing him to authorize Colonels Thomas W Harris, James M True and Silas C Toler, to raise and report the regiments already in camp" .by order of the Governor. The units raised included the 54th, 60th, 62nf and 63rd IllinoisVolunteers and served in many battles incl Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Jonesboro, Arkansas etc. The 2pp 8 x 10" ink Letter is written on onionskin, indicating it was written by General Fuller to his staff to preserve this letter for his own file. .
