The Northeast Iowa 38th Volunteer Infantry was called the \"Martyr Regiment\". Mustered in 1862 at Dubuque and composed of men of the 5 NE Iowa Counties , the Iowans suffered enormous losses due to typhoid fever & malaria during the siege of Vicksburg where the unit manned the extreme left of the line, bordering a cypress swamp, and was decimated, along with it Colonel David Henry Hughes and over 300 it\'s 900 men dying in a little over a year. In 1864 it was consolidated with the 34th Iowa Infantry, serving to the War\'s End including Texas and the Siege of Mobile, Alabama.
An Original Mourning badge that came with a group of a veteran of the 38th worn at a comrade\'s funeral. The 7.3\" black mourning ribbon has a brass/celluloid pinbar with color illus of the Gar member badge and is mkd \"Grand Army of the Republic\". The suspended badge, approx 1.75\" diameter shows Union soldiers in combat and is attached by a red/white/blue ribbon with a separate white ribbon backing. The black ribbon has silver lettering \"Memorial Post No. 216 G.A.R Cresco, Iowa\". Iowa GAR Post No. 216 named the \"Memorial Post\" was chartered in 1883 and discontinued in 1936.
