Sergeant John Myers, of Mound City, Illinois served with the 7th Illinois Infantry from 1861 until December, 1862 when he shot his commander, Captain Henry W Allen in the camp of the 7th Illinois at Corinth, Mississippi. Myers was tried in camp by courtmartial and the court over which Colonel AJ Babcock presided, sentenced him to be hanged. Myers appealed the sentence and remained in prison until April, 1864 when President Lincoln approved the sentence and he was hanged at Pulaski, Tennessee. An Original Civil War General Order issued at Washington, DC, April 14, 1864 detailing the charges against Sergeant John Myers, G Company, 7th Illinois including killing his commanding officer, Captain Henry W Allen with a musket at the Post of Corinth, Mississippi, in the camp of the 7th Illinois. The court, finding him guilty , sentences him to be "hanged by the neck until he be dead", and despite his appeal of the sentence, the President orders the sentence to be carried out. The Order also charges Private John McKeone of the 8th US Infantry with theft of a musket at new York City,and an attempt to sell , and a Draftee, Alonso E Long, of Maine with desertion and sentences the draftee him to be "shot to death with musketry". On appeal the President remits Private McKeone's sentence to imprisonment and orders the Draftee to be returned to his regiment. 4pp 8 x 5" ptd. Age stains, edge wear, Overall VG.
