Fort Stedman, Petersburg, Virginia was Union Army position that was attacked and overrun by GenerAL Robert E Lee\'s forces in the last Confederate Offensive of the War, March 25, 1865. An Original Civil War Ordnance Invoiceissued the day after the Battlefor a Springfield Rifle Musket and cartridge boxes, etc, turned over by Lt David P Scully, 29th Massachusetts to Captain John M Deane, commanding the regiment \"near Petersburg, Va\", March 26, 1865. The Invoice came from the estate of Captain Deane whowas awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic defense of the guns at Fort Stedman during the rebel onslaught. The musket and accessories were likely picked up after the Battle. PostwarCaptain Deanwas GAR Post Commander at Falls River, Mass, and is buried at his boyhood hometown, Freetown Massachusetts.
